CO. 515 23732 Reed & Wave 4 SEP 19 Memo, by the Director of Public Works.

By far the most important road projected in the New Territory is that from British Kowloon (a continuation of the main road through the rapidly growing town of Sim-tsat-tsui, Yaumati, Mongkoktsui) to Sha-tim Inlet in Mirs Bay, Taipo-hui and Sam Chun.

An excellent trace has been found for this through the range of hills lying to the north of Kowloon, and work is actively in progress on seven miles of the road. The road is being constructed 14 feet wide, with permanent bridges and culverts and no steeper inclines than 1 in 20, most of it will be at much easier gradients.

The work is being done on a schedule contract at reasonable rates and over 1,000 men are daily employed on it, chiefly villagers in the New Territory.

The expenditure to June 30th was $17,200, and a further expenditure of $50,000 will probably be incurred this year.
